The most significant was the change from a solid front axle to independent front suspension and a new, hydraulic braking system, which replaced the outdated mechanical brakes. Only 1,300 packard twelves were built for the 1937 model year and the bulk of those produced were sedans. The 1507 series packard’s were built on the long 139 ¼” wheelbase chassis and were powered by the 473. 3 cid/ 175 horsepower, twelve cylinder engine. This vehicle was once part of the zach brinkeroff collection and was purchased by the current owner about twenty years ago. Upon purchasing this very complete and authentic example, the owner commissioned noted packard restorer, mark clayton restorations of castle rock, colorado, to complete a frame off restoration that was completed in 1998. Since the restoration was completed, this car has been consistently maintained and stored in a museum like environment. The packard maroon paint remains in good overall condition showing only the expected signs of aging and wear that one would expect from an older restoration. The paint has a consistent and strong overall gloss and presents extremely well. The overall fit and finish of the body panels is excellent. The doors fit the body with even gaps and margins and the hood aligns properly with the front grill assembly and cowl. The interior and rumble seat compartment have been completely refinished in a period correct, taupe leather, which also remains in very nice condition as does the tan, canvas top. The wood grained dashboard retains all of its original gauges, which have been properly restored and are in working condition. All of the glass was replaced at the time of restoration and remain in like new condition. The chrome is in excellent condition and is free of oxidation or wear. The engine bay and chassis show little signs of use and are clean and presentable. The original engine 906659) starts easily, idles well and easily propels the car down the road at modern, highway speeds. The transmission shifts easily, the brakes and steering are tight and responsive. This desirable 15th series packard twelve retains its important and original data plate, which shows the vehicle as car number 1039258. This number, stamped on its original tag, proves that this car was always a body style #1039 coupe roadster and it is the 58th coupe roadster body built during the 1937 model year. The firewall has the embossed packard id number of 365172. The car is equipped with desirable packard options and accessories including dual side-mounted spare tires with metal covers and mirrors, a rear packard script luggage rack, a radio, front trippe driving lights and the packard cormorant radiator mascot. In 1921, packard introduced the single six, a smaller, less expensive alternative to the big, v-12, twin six. Packard refined the single six and lowered its price over the next few years. It easily outsold the new single eight introduced at the same time due to its reliability and its thousand-dollar difference in price. The third series six, introduced in february 1925, did even better and contributed to more than three-quarters of packard sales. The engine benefited from a new turbo-head with redesigned combustion chambers that boosted horsepower to 81. New aluminum pistons and a redesigned intake manifold also contributed to the improved performance. This was also the first production automobile to use a hypoid differential, which, allowed for a lower ride height. The final iteration of the packard six (until a much smaller and less expensive model was built in 1937) was the fifth series six, introduced on july 1, 1927. It came on 126 and 133 wheelbases and labeled as series 526 and 533. With nearly 22,000 built, the six still outsold the eights by a wide margin. With its chassis number of 126713, it was one of the first fifth series sixes built and was likely built in late 1927. It was the second, most expensive six-cylinder packard built with a base-selling price of 2,685. 00. This particular example is being offered from the estate of a prominent local collector. While its early history is unknown, it was purchased about fifteen years ago and has been stored in a climate-controlled, museum-like environment. During his ownership, this packard was always well maintained and used sparingly. As an older restoration of a very original car, this 1927 packard has a great look about it. The exterior paint is older but well preserved. It has the usual wear one would expect from an older repaint. The paint has an overall, even but mellowed gloss to it and still shines well. It is likely that this vehicle was never completely disassembled and has only been repainted once. This car is not perfect by any means but displays itself.
